Crab Grass

Time to rid yourself of Crab Grass

Now is an excellent time to pull crabgrass in preparation for fall over seeding in Kansas. My lawn gets crabgrass mostly around the edges of things, the street, driveway, flowerbeds, but it also spreads from there so I just spent about 8 hrs pulling the nasty grass and disposing of it. It's not too hard after watering. I found both hairy and smooth crabgrass in my lawn and I found the hairy is easier to pull. Even when it is rooted in the Fesque it tends to spread across the top of the Fesque while the smooth crabgrass does not and is a little harder to get out by the roots.

Great post Daryl!
I just wanted to add a little about some natural means to kill crab grass seeds and the crab grass itself.

Crabgrass seed has a long germination period, if conditions are right, it can germinate throughout the growing season but it usually only germinates in the spring and early summer.

To kill the seeds you can use corn gluten, it is simple and truly natural and organic and you can even eat it right out of the box.

One application will last about 50 days so in some cases you may have to apply twice in a season, start in early spring. Apply 30 pounds per 1500 square feet for best results.
It will not only kill crab grass but will also kill dandelion seeds and other small weed seeds.

The best part it is 10% nitrogen so will also feed your lawn or vegetable garden as it breaks down it will release the nitrogen for a lush green lawn.

If you already have crab grass and want to kill the plants themselves make a mix of ground cinnamon bark, corn flower, cumin, and baking soda. Spray directly on the plants and they should die within a few days.

These natural crab grass killers are also available commercially in many garden supply catalogs. Make sure to get them organic, no need to use chemicals and poison yourself.

As Daryl says you can always pull out the plants and it is prime time for that now!

Don’t get crabby, it’s a beautiful day.

David, thanks for adding the bit about how to kill crabgrass. "If you already have crab grass and want to kill the plants themselves make a mix of ground cinnamon bark, corn flower, cumin, and baking soda. Spray directly on the plants and they should die within a few days." One question: How much of each ingredient should be used?
